The importance of the German market for Veneto’s ports and the relations established and strengthened in recent years with many public and private stakeholders to promote the growth of Veneto’s port system, led the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority (AdSPMAS) to be invited to participate in the “WORKSHOP on combined transport – Opportunities of digitalization for transalpine intermodal freight transport” to be held in Nuremberg on 7 March 2024.
Jointly promoted by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, parties responsible for the Alpine strategy and the SGKV-Studiengesellschaft für den Kombinierten Verkehr (German Centre for the Promotion of Intermodal Transport, whose members include more than 80 operators in the logistics-intermodal sector), the event aims to identify freight transport solutions that use smart transport chains to better meet ecological, efficiency and sustainability requirements.
That also means complying with agreements and policies stemming from the Alpine Space Convention: signed by 8 countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Principality of Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland) and the European Union in 1991, the Alpine Space Convention is an international treaty which came into force in 1995 with the aim of developing a common policy to reduce the impacts of transport in the Alpine region.
Indeed, the Convention can be considered a forerunner of the UN Agenda 2030 as its Protocols, Declarations and implementation tools directly contribute to achieving the UN’s SDGs, with very specific knowledge of the Alpine setting gained in recent decades. As regards port policies, reference should be made to the 2000 Transport Protocol and to the more recent MULTI-ANNUAL WORK PROGRAMME OF THE ALPINE CONFERENCE (AC_MAP) 2023–2030, which identifies biodiversity and ecosystems, climate change, and quality of life as priorities.
In this context, AdSPMAS, represented by its Secretary General Antonella Scardino, is called upon to contribute to the Workshop and discuss policies and interventions aimed at reducing the impacts of transport through investment in railway mode, intermodality, and the digitalisation of processes.
Alongside engineer Scardino, the workshop will also welcome Bavarian stakeholders involved in the implementation of the Alpine strategy, representatives of BayernHafen, of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, and of the Center for Transport and Logistics Neuer Adler will, which, with more than 140 active members and over 650 competent partners, represents key players in the transport and logistics sector both within and outside Bavaria.
