Strategic Location and Railway Traffic
Maritime traffic accounts for approximately 10% of the combined transportation modes. However, the composition of the two modes in terms of cargo categories differs.
The Port of Venice is characterized by a high diversity of goods compared to other national hubs. In 2022 alone, 32 different types of goods were handled, mostly belonging to the steel industry (53.1%), agri-food (19.1%), petroleum (17.31%), and chemicals (6.71%). Smaller shares were related to ro-ro traffic (2.1%), coal (1.07%), and other goods (0.67%).
Due to its strategic geographical position in relation to Northeast Italy and Central Eastern Europe, which is the new hub of European manufacturing, companies in the Port of Venice and their customers are increasingly using the railway mode to connect to various destinations in the heart of Europe.
Approximately 73.6% of the traffic originates and ends nationally, with 16.4% transiting via Tarvisio, 8.6% via Villa Opicina, and 1.4% via Brennero.
